20 Pearls Scholarship Challenge

These 20 Pearls have a significant meaning to us.  They are guiding principles for our life’s work.  We are kindly asking you to donate a minimum of $20 to our scholarship program.  If you donate $400 ($20 per pearl) or more, you will receive a special 20 Pearls commemorative coin in honor of your generous commitment to scholarship and uplift.  100% of your contribution will support the 2024/2025 academic year scholarships.  In addition, if you donate $1500 or more, you will be a named scholarship sponsor for 2024!

The Issues

Historically, young African American men have faced huge societal challenges and social barriers towards reaching their full potential.  High school dropout and incarceration rates are high among young African American men.  For those that make it to college, perils still exist.  According to the most recent statistics, the nationwide college graduation rate for African American students is 42%, a full 20% below their white counterparts.

As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the goal of the Southeast Michigan Omega Foundation, Incorporated (SMOFI) is to mentor young African American males and provide them with scholarship opportunities at the college level.  Guided by the Cardinal Principles of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift, our Mission is:

“To have a strong, positive and uplifting impact on Southeast Michigan youth and their families by providing them programs and services that educate, mentor, support and broaden their horizons.”

Since 2001, we have awarded college scholarships to 102 graduating high school students, amounting to over $400,000.  Our scholars have maintained an impressive 88% graduation rate.  In 2024, we anticipate awarding thirty-two (32) scholarships totaling $48,000 (new and renewing awards).  Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, financial need, and other relevant factors.  Each award is $1,500 and may be renewed for up to three (3) consecutive additional years — for a total award of $6,000, over four (4) years.  We also anticipate providing our four (4) male mentoring programs with up to $5,000 each — for a total of $20,000.

To ensure that our scholars can stay in school and we continue to mentor our youth, we invite you to participate in our nationwide fundraising challenge.

Summary

Most of us can acknowledge how support and mentorship over the years has changed of our lives.  Your  contribution will go a long way in shaping the future of a young African American male towards Manhood and self-reliance.  Please take action — TODAY and we will add your name to our wall of honor.  Help our students by participating in the 20 Pearls Scholarship Challenge.  Your donation is tax deductible in accordance with federal law.

Thank you,
Southeast Michigan Omega Foundation, Incorporated
